Liezel de Waal discussed different considerations with regards to evaluation design and provide an overview of some useful guidelines to incorporate into decision-making processes regarding appropriate design aspects for evaluations within this context. She provided a platform for discussion among participants by means of applying some of these guidelines with the use of case studies. This will allow the sharing of practical experience and generating deeper insight into the different aspects discussed.

Presenter: 

Liezel de Waal holds a Master’s degree in Sociology (2006) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation(2009), both from Stellenbosch University. Liezel started working as an evaluator in 2009. She's been able to apply her talents to organisations that seek improvement in their social development programmes through implementing evaluations, developing M&E systems, data management systems, strategic planning and project management. Together with her business partner, Megan Franklin, their company, M&ESURE Research and Evaluation, has worked on almost40 evaluations (being lead evaluators on more than 30); 20 social science research projects and more than 20monitoring and evaluation frameworks. Before becoming an evaluator, Liezel worked as a social science researcher for six years in a variety of different fields, including social assistance grants, science and technology and higher education. Liezel is passionate about capacity-development of people who are ultimately responsible for the delivery of good quality development programmes. Liezel's sector experience includes entrepreneurship/ small business development, higher education and social development programmes.
